My phone buzzed in my pocket. I took it out and looked at it for a minute, not picking up. It was a prepaid silver flip phone that had cost about $15. I couldn't tell if my hand was shaking because the phone was vibrating when it rang or because my fist was trembling as I clutched it. I almost let it go to voicemail, but at the last minute I flipped it open. There was a long uneasy silence on the other end of the line. "Shay?" I didn't answer, "Shay, it's Spencer. I know you're there."
I slowly exhaled. "Hey. Any news?"
"Max's trial was today." There was a pause "He got 6 years, minimum security."
"Good for him." I said coldly
"You don't have to be so bitter, he's not the one who snitched."
"I know." I fiddled with the zipper on my hoodie "Have you heard anything about the investigation?"
"Yeah, you were last seen in St. Louis and they think I'm still with you, so I'm in the clear for a while."
"Lucky you." I scowled, looking over at the clock the previous owner had left on the wall, it was 4:00 p.m.
"I gotta go. Take care of yourself." Spencer hung up
"Yeah, you too." I said into the dial tone.
I returned the phone to my pocket and leaned against the wall. I was sitting on a sleeping bag on the floor of my empty apartment. All the blinds were drawn. I've been in Collingwood for maybe a week. I work the graveyard shift at Fast Gas and other than that I don't really leave my apartment. I fidgeted with the fake ID I'd pissed $100 away on in high school, I didn't even like the name Joan, it was just something I'd thought of on the spot when I first got it. I had to be at Fast Gas at 9. I lied down and, for the remaining hours before my shift started, drifted in and out of sleep.
